The chairman of Vedanta has stated that India has the capability to surpass Brazil and China in the production of iron ore.

**India Poised to Become Second Largest Iron Ore Producer**

India has the potential to surpass Brazil and China, positioning itself as the world’s second-largest iron ore producer, according to Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal. In the 2024-25 fiscal year (April-January), India’s iron ore production increased by 3.5% to 236 million metric tonnes (MMT), up from 228 MMT in the previous year.

Agarwal emphasized that with India’s vast iron ore reserves, the country could produce up to 700 million tonnes annually, making it feasible to rank just behind Australia in global production. He highlighted the significant economic benefits this growth could bring to India, including job creation and increased government revenue.

As the fourth-largest iron ore producer globally, India trails only Australia, Brazil, and China. The provisional production figure for 2023-24 was approximately 275 million tonnes, marking a 7.5% year-on-year increase, as reported by the mines ministry. Key contributors to this output included NMDC, SAIL, Odisha Mining Corporation, and Tata Steel Ltd. Notably, Odisha emerged as the largest producer, accounting for 54% of the nation’s total iron ore output, followed by Karnataka and Chhattisgarh with 16% and 15%, respectively.

India’s iron ore reserves are estimated at 33 billion tonnes, which could significantly bolster the country’s ambitions in the global mining sector. Agarwal pointed out that the growth in mining could lead to rapid development in states rich in iron ore, such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. These regions currently have per capita incomes below the national average, but with their substantial underground potential, they could easily surpass it.

Vedanta Group’s Sesa Goa Iron Ore is actively involved in the exploration, mining, and processing of iron ore across Goa, Karnataka, and Odisha, contributing to the sector’s growth and the overall economic landscape of India.
