**The King’s Personal Playlist: A Celebration of Music**
King Charles has unveiled a personal playlist filled with tracks that bring him joy, showcasing a diverse range of genres from reggae and Afrobeats to contemporary pop. His selection includes iconic artists such as Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue, and Grace Jones, alongside contemporary stars like Nigerian-American singer-songwriter Davido and recent Brit Award winner Raye.
The King recorded his Apple Music radio show, titled “The King’s Music Room,” from his office at Buckingham Palace. This show is named after a state room in the royal residence where a young Prince Charles was christened in 1948. During the broadcast, the monarch shares personal anecdotes about his encounters with various artists and reflects on how these songs have shaped the soundtrack of his life. He discusses the profound impact music has had on him, highlighting its ability to evoke happy memories and provide solace during difficult times.
In announcing the special show, which also reveals his fondness for “1930s crooners,” the King expressed, “Throughout my life, music has meant a great deal to me. I know that is also the case for so many others. It has that remarkable ability to bring happy memories flooding back from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in times of sadness, and to take us to distant places. But perhaps, above all, it can lift our spirits to such a degree, and all the more so when it brings us together in celebration. In other words, it brings us joy.”
“The King’s Music Room” will air on Apple Music 1 in honor of Commonwealth Day on Monday, March 10. A new image released for the occasion shows the King at his desk in the palace during the recording, with an illuminated “On Air” sign beside him.
In 2021, King Charles shared that some of his favorite songs include tracks by The Three Degrees, Diana Ross, and Edith Piaf. He is not the only royal to express his musical preferences; the late Queen’s favorites reportedly included “Oklahoma” from the musical of the same name, “Anything You Can Do” from “Annie Get Your Gun,” and George Formby’s “Leaning On A Lamp-Post.” Additionally, the Prince of Wales attended a Taylor Swift concert with Prince George and Princess Charlotte last year and has mentioned that he enjoys a wide variety of music.
