The prohibition of meat sales in Kalyan on Independence Day has triggered a political uproar.

**Kalyan-Dombivli’s Meat Sale Ban Sparks Political Controversy**

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) recent order prohibiting the sale of meat on Independence Day has ignited a political controversy, with opposition leaders from the NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) condemning it as an infringement on personal food choices. According to the KDMC directive, all licensed slaughterhouses and butcher shops selling goats, sheep, chickens, and large animals must remain closed for 24 hours, from midnight on August 14 to midnight on August 15. The civic body has warned that any violations during this period could lead to action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act of 1949.

KDMC Deputy Commissioner (Licenses) Kanchan Gaikwad stated that this order has been in place annually since 1988 as part of a civic resolution aimed at maintaining public order during significant national events. Additional Commissioner Yogesh Godse clarified that while the sale of mutton and chicken is banned, there is no restriction on consuming these items, noting that similar measures are also enforced on Republic Day.

The opposition has reacted strongly to the ban. NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad announced plans to host a mutton party on August 15 to assert the “freedom” of food choices. He criticized the order, stating, “On the day we gained freedom, you are taking away our freedom to eat what we want.” Bhiwandi MP Suresh Mhatre of the NCP (SP) echoed these sentiments, arguing that the ban infringes on traditional dietary practices, emphasizing that food choices are personal matters.

In defense of the order, Kalyan (West) MLA and ruling Shiv Sena leader Vishwanath Bhoir remarked, “If one day passes without eating meat, what will happen? Ordinary people are not complaining. The municipal administration acts in the interest of citizens.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray called for the suspension of the KDMC commissioner for “dictating people’s food choices.” He asserted, “What we eat on Independence Day is our right, our freedom. They cannot tell us whether to eat veg or non-veg.” Thackeray highlighted that even during religious observances, his family includes seafood in their traditions, stating, “This is not a matter of religion, and it is not a matter of national interest.”

The controversy surrounding the KDMC’s meat sale ban raises important questions about personal freedoms and cultural practices, reflecting the ongoing debate over food choices in the context of national celebrations.
