This year, Amazon plans to concentrate on small towns by hosting a three-day Prime Day sale.

**Amazon India Expands Prime Day to Three Days, Targeting Small Towns**

Amazon India is set to extend its popular Prime Day sale to three days in July, focusing more on small towns and cities. This move highlights the significance of sale events for e-commerce platforms amid a slowdown in industry growth. The Prime Day event will take place from July 12 to 14, offering Prime members early access to new product launches across various categories, including consumer electronics, groceries, essentials, and home improvement items.

Akshay Sahi, Director of Prime, Delivery, and Returns for India and emerging markets, noted that the decision to extend the sale was influenced by customer feedback. Many customers expressed disappointment at missing out on purchases after previous Prime Day events, and there has been considerable interest from brands and sellers on the platform.

Despite the Indian e-commerce market nearing $60 billion in 2024, growth has slowed to 10-12% from the historical rate of over 20%, as reported by Flipkart and Bain & Co. This decline is attributed to macroeconomic factors and consumption stress, with consumption growth dropping from 11% in the pre-COVID period to about 8% post-COVID due to inflation and stagnant real wages. Consequently, sales events have become crucial for e-commerce companies to boost revenue and encourage more frequent purchases throughout the year.

This year, Amazon plans to offer a wider array of deals, including additional discounts and no-cost EMI payment options for select credit and debit cardholders. These initiatives aim to attract customers in smaller towns, positioning Amazon to compete more effectively with rivals like Meesho and Flipkart. Currently, Flipkart leads the e-commerce market with a 48% share, while Meesho is recognized as the fastest-growing e-retailer in terms of user base. Amazon, with a 13% growth in its user base, has been perceived as offering more premium products compared to its competitors.

Sahi emphasized that Prime subscribers from non-metro areas are increasing annually, with events like Prime Day accelerating this trend. “Prime is no longer just a metro phenomenon. Customers from smaller towns are increasingly enjoying Prime’s offerings, and adoption is accelerated during sale events. Today, Prime members are shopping from 98% of PIN codes in India,” he stated.

Since its introduction in India in 2016, Amazon Prime has evolved from offering one-day and two-day deliveries for ₹499 per year to a current membership cost of ₹1,499 annually or ₹299 monthly. The company is also enhancing its tiered membership plans, including Prime Lite at ₹799 for 12 months and Prime Shopping Edition at ₹399 for 12 months, to reach a broader consumer base.

In summary, Amazon India’s expansion of Prime Day to three days reflects its commitment to engaging customers in smaller towns and adapting to the changing e-commerce landscape.
