He joined other families in the stands, cheering enthusiastically during the title match. Sam plays a crucial defensive role for the Buccaneers, significantly contributing to the team’s success in preventing the Episcopal School from scoring. “The defense really led the team all year,” said Hillary Carney, head coach of The Benjamin School. “It was about keeping the door shut and not allowing them to score, knowing we would get one, maybe two. The stalwart defense, with Emily [Simon] in goal and Sam as the senior in the back, was key in settling everything.”
The only goal of the match was scored by freshman Emma Bartoli, providing a fitting conclusion to Woods’ senior season, during which her team had only four regular-season wins before an impressive playoff run that led them to the championship game. In the fall, she will be attending Stanford University, the same institution where her father played for two years before turning professional on the PGA Tour.
Charlie Woods, Tiger’s son and Sam’s younger brother, also excels at The Benjamin School, where he is a standout on the men’s golf team, which won the Florida High School Athletic Association Class A state championship in 2023—an achievement his father never accomplished during his illustrious career.
