**Bill Gates Commends Elon Musk’s Achievements but Expresses Surprise at His Political Commentary**
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has expressed admiration for the significant contributions made by Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Gates acknowledged the impressive work Musk has accomplished, although he admitted to being taken aback by some of Musk’s remarks regarding European politics.
Reflecting on his own experiences, including his childhood and the early days of Microsoft, Gates stated, “I admire a lot of the work he has done.” When asked about the last time he communicated with Musk, Gates revealed that it had been approximately 18 months since their last direct conversation. He noted, “I’ve known Elon over the years; he’s a member of the Giving Pledge, and I admire a lot of the great work he’s done.”
Regarding Musk’s influence on political matters, Gates shared a nuanced perspective. He acknowledged the potential value of examining government spending through a zero-based budgeting lens, emphasizing the importance of addressing the national deficit to prevent future financial issues. However, he expressed some surprise at Musk’s engagement with European political figures, stating, “I’m not trying to talk about European politicians like he is. So some of that surprises me a bit. But wow, he finds time to do a lot of things.”
On the topic of budget optimization, Gates maintained a pragmatic stance. He highlighted the need for careful consideration of government expenditures, particularly in areas like healthcare and social services. He cautioned against drastic cuts that could jeopardize essential programs, such as those providing HIV medications, which play a crucial role in saving lives. Gates concluded, “I hope the value system still includes that half a percent that saves all those lives.”
