However, Mahomes faced criticism for seemingly overlooking running back Samaje Perine while greeting others.
In a moment captured on video that went viral following the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss, Perine stood up, ready to shake hands with Mahomes, but the quarterback chose to speak with tight end Travis Kelce instead. This incident raised questions among fans about why Mahomes would skip over Perine after acknowledging the rest of his teammates.
Perine, a seasoned NFL player, joined the Chiefs in 2024 after previous stints with the Washington Commanders, Cincinnati Bengals, and Denver Broncos. During the regular season, he primarily contributed in the passing game, recording 28 receptions for 322 yards and one touchdown, along with 92 rushing yards on 20 carries and another touchdown. Notably, he caught a crucial pass from Mahomes in the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills, which helped secure their spot in the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year.
While Mahomes did not address the sideline incident involving Perine after the game, he did express his feelings about the loss on social media, acknowledging the disappointment of the worst start of his career. He wrote, “Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom. I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it.
