Delta Airlines has announced a compensation of approximately $30,000 (₹26 lakh) for each passenger involved in the plane crash at Toronto Pearson International Airport on February 17. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and Delta reported that 20 out of the 21 passengers have been discharged from hospitals, according to Reuters. This compensation reflects Delta’s commitment to supporting its passengers following the incident. A spokesperson for the airline stated, “This gesture has no strings attached and does not affect the rights” of the passengers.
In similar past incidents, airlines have provided compensation, such as the $5,000 offered to passengers of US Airways’ “Miracle on the Hudson” flight in 2009 to assist with replacing lost belongings, as reported by Bloomberg.
The Delta Airlines flight crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, ultimately coming to rest upside down on the runway. The incident involved 76 passengers and four crew members, with 21 individuals sustaining injuries. A widely circulated video on social media depicted the Delta Air Lines plane overturned and missing its right wing after the crash.
On Tuesday, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reported that parts of the Bombardier-made CRJ900 aircraft detached upon impact. The fuselage ended up slightly off the right side of the runway, inverted and facing the opposite direction.
US aviation safety expert Anthony Brickhouse explained that aircraft are typically designed to land first on the two main landing gears, followed by the nose gear. “With all the forces at play, if that wing isn’t there to support the aircraft, it’s going to flip over,” Brickhouse noted, according to Reuters. “While this isn’t something we often see when structural components fail and can’t perform their intended function, the aircraft will respond to the varying forces acting on it.
