Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has made headlines for a spelling mistake in a previous speech about the Philadelphia Eagles, and now she has faced criticism for exceeding the word count in another address. During the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory parade on Friday, Parker took the stage to speak to the enthusiastic crowd of fans. However, her lengthy speech prompted boos and chants of “Wrap it up!” from the audience, who felt it was dragging on too long. Ultimately, her speech lasted over five minutes, while most other speakers kept their remarks brief.
The parade also witnessed some chaotic moments, including Eagles general manager Howie Roseman being struck in the head by a beer can, resulting in a bleeding injury, and a shooting incident that left two women injured. Parker’s previous Eagles-related speeches had already drawn criticism in January, when she misspelled the team’s name during a celebratory chant ahead of their playoff victory over the Los Angeles Rams on January 19. Attempting to engage the crowd, she spelled it “E-L-G-S-E-S,” which led to widespread online ridicule.
In response to the backlash, Parker addressed the misspelling at a press conference shortly after, humorously stating, “We don’t promise perfection, I’m so happy I never have. Especially after I couldn’t spell ‘Eagles’ right,” eliciting laughter from reporters present. The misspelling even inspired a T-shirt created by a local Philadelphia sports apparel company.
Parker, who is currently in her first term as mayor after winning the 2023 election, made history as the city’s first female mayor by defeating Republican David Oh. She previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2005 to 2015 and on the Philadelphia City Council from 2015 to 2022.
