**Bengaluru Leaders Assess Flood Damage After Heavy Rainfall**

On Monday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) War Room, also known as the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), to evaluate the impact of the heavy rainfall that occurred the previous night. They received a briefing from BBMP Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath regarding the status of flood-prone areas and engaged virtually with officials and residents from affected neighborhoods, including Sai Layout, Manyata Tech Park, and Silk Board Junction.

During their visit to Sai Layout, the leaders listened to residents’ concerns and assured them that the Geddalahalli railway bridge would be widened and a permanent solution to flooding would be implemented. In Manyata Tech Park, BBMP officials were directed to commence work on a dedicated stormwater drain linked to the main drainage system, utilizing disaster management provisions.

At Silk Board Junction, where significant waterlogging was reported, a JCB was deployed to create an outlet for draining the accumulated water. The BBMP was also instructed to collaborate with Metro authorities to enhance the drainage infrastructure to better handle heavy rainfall.

The Ministers reviewed ongoing drainage projects in Hebbal and other low-lying areas. Traffic police have identified 132 flood-prone locations in the city, with work completed in 82 of these areas, while 41 remain pending.

The intense downpour on May 18-19 was one of the most severe this year, prompting a heavy rain alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Tragically, a 35-year-old woman named Shashikala lost her life in Mahadevapura when a compound wall collapsed due to rain-related damage. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for her family, which includes her husband, a daily wage laborer, and their two children.

In a media address, Siddaramaiah announced a full-day inspection of Bengaluru scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, alongside Deputy Chief Ministers and MLAs. He emphasized the importance of visiting sensitive areas, addressing grievances, and reviewing officials’ actions to ensure accountability.

Siddaramaiah also outlined the civic response to the flooding: of the city’s 859.90 km stormwater drain network, retaining walls have been constructed along 491 km, with ongoing work on another 195 km. The World Bank is funding improvements along 173 km. However, challenges such as encroachments, shallow drains, and silt accumulation persist, with efforts to clear them underway.

Bengaluru has 210 identified flood-prone zones; 166 have been addressed, and temporary measures are in place for the remaining 44, with 24 currently undergoing active mitigation work.

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to treating all citizens equally, stating, “All are equal before the law,” and mentioned that civic response teams have been deployed to clear fallen trees.
