Sky News has garnered nine nominations for the RTS TV journalism awards, including the prestigious news channel of the year. Our on-the-ground coverage of the Southport stabbings, led by Sarah-Jane Mee, is nominated for the breaking news award, competing against BBC’s coverage of the Trump assassination attempt and Reuters’ reporting on the Hezbollah pager explosions.
The nominations cover eight categories, featuring several correspondents and presenters vying for recognition. Political editor Beth Rigby and deputy political editor Sam Coates are among the three nominees in their category, having provided extensive coverage of July’s election, including Rigby’s interviews with Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer in Grimsby.
“The World With Yalda Hakim” is also nominated for network daily news programme of the year, competing against Channel 4 News and ITV News. The show has featured exclusive interviews with the Qatari prime minister, a key figure in Gaza ceasefire negotiations, who cautioned that January’s agreement might be “the last chance for peace.”
Sky News’ reporting on the Sudan war, led by Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir and her team, has been recognized in the international news category, alongside CNN and ITV’s coverage of Gaza. Chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay, who won an international Emmy in September for his reporting on the Myanmar war, is nominated for network TV journalist of the year. His work includes an exclusive interview with President Zelenskyy, who indicated that a ceasefire could be possible if Ukrainian territory fell “under the NATO umbrella,” as well as coverage of “The Beast” train transporting migrants toward America.
Sophy Ridge, Sky News’ lead political presenter, and data and forensics correspondent Tom Cheshire are also nominated for best network presenter and specialist journalist, respectively.
The RTS journalism awards, hosted by ITV’s Tom Bradby, will take place on March 5 at London’s Park Lane Hilton.
