The coaching staff of the Commanders has brought on board the grandson of John Madden, who is also a former player for Michigan football.

The Madden family is making a return to the National Football League. The Washington Commanders announced on Tuesday the hiring of Jesse Madden, grandson of the legendary John Madden, as an offensive quality control coach. Jesse recently graduated from the University of Michigan, where he was part of the football program that won the national championship in 2024. He began his college career as a quarterback in 2021 before transitioning to defensive back.

John Madden, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, had an impressive coaching record of 103-32-7 over ten seasons with the Oakland Raiders, leading the team to a Super Bowl victory in the 1976 season before becoming a prominent NFL broadcaster.

The Commanders had a remarkable turnaround in the 2024 season, improving from a 4-13 record to 12-5 and reaching the NFC Championship Game, thanks in part to Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.

Additionally, the Commanders have brought on Brian Schneider as the assistant special teams coordinator. With 18 years of coaching experience in the NFL, Schneider previously served as the special teams coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 and 2023, and he held the same position with the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2020, where his units excelled in takeaways and blocked kicks.
